The peloton splits with 50km to go: Gigante falls behind
Lorena Wiebes wins the fifth stage of the women's Giro d'Italia, 120 km from Mirano to Monselice.
Today's stage, which was completely flat, should have been resolved with a bunch sprint, but surprisingly, with 50 km to go, the group split in two, with around 20 athletes gaining a lead.
In the leading group, the strong SD Worx team worked to maintain a wide gap and favor Wiebes 's sprint. The Dutchman secured the victory, outsprinting Vos and Lippert . The top ten included Reusser, Kopecky, Longo Borghini, Ragusa, and Persico.
The trailing group consisting of Gigante, Kastellijn, Niedermaier, Rooijakkers and Trinca Colonel reached the finish line 1'42" behind.
