Italian sprinter Jan Christen falls
Jonathan Milan wins the first stage of the AlUla Tour 2026 , starting and finishing at the 158km AlUla Cemel Cup Track .
A stage with a tricky final circuit and finish, making it wide open and uncertain. Four riders attempted a breakaway: Muhammad Rosli (Terengganu Cycling Team), Ali Al Sheik (Saudi Arabia), Said Alrahbi, and Mohammed Al-Wahaibi (Oman).
The breakaway riders reach a maximum lead of 3'30", but then the attack is cancelled out with 65 km to go.
With 44 km to go, Jan Christen also crashed, but he immediately restarted and didn't appear to suffer any injuries.
The peloton splits, with the UAE team in the third group to let Christen back in. At the front are practically all the sprinters: Milan, Bauhaus, Gaviria, Moschetti, Laurenz Rex, Fabio Jakobsen , the Lithuanian champion Mikutis, and the Frenchman Jason Tesson of Total Energis.
The leading group immediately gained about thirty seconds on the peloton, but then, under the impetus of UAE and Tudor , it seemed that the group could come back, but then Christen fell again , lost contact and recovered on the main group, this time however with more difficulty.
With 8km to go, the leading group has a 30” lead over the main group, which however accelerates and reaches a 12” lead with 5km to go.
The group, however, couldn't keep up, and De Jong tried to get ahead of the pack with 800 meters to go. The Dutchman was caught, and Jonathan Milan found the right acceleration and went on to win ahead of Fretin and Moschetti .
With this victory, Milan also wears the leader's jersey in the general classification.
