The Dutchman: "It's difficult to win without having taken part in some races."
Mathieu Van der Poel continues to prove his relentlessness in the Cyclocross World Cup . The world champion also wins in Hoogereide, thus winning his twelfth race in as many races.
Van der Poel breaks away alongside his Alpecin Premier Tech teammate, Tibor Del Grosso , on the second lap.
The two men were together for a short time, as the Dutch phenomenon accelerated and his young compatriot couldn't keep up. From then on, it was a long 45-minute solo run by Van der Poel, who went on to win by a wide margin and also took the overall World Cup standings. Second and third place went to Tibor Del Grosso and Niels Vandeputte , who outsprinted Thibau Nys in the sprint.
" I'm happy, I felt as strong as yesterday ," Van der Poel said post-race, recalling his victory in Maasmechelen. "I worked really hard in Spain to get this good. Now I should have a calmer week ahead of the World Championships on Sunday, where I want to be in top form."
The reference is to the training camp held in Calpe with the team, also to prepare for the start of the road season. "It's my second World Cup victory, I'm happy," the Dutchman continued. "It was a bit difficult to achieve without competing in all the races, but in the end I did it. I'm satisfied."
Van der Poel's next big goal is the World Championships in Hulst , scheduled for February 1st. This will be the last event of the season. Then the Dutchman will return to focus on the road season.
