The Astana rider surprised everyone by holding on to the final climb of Green Mountain , going on to win the fifth stage and the overall classification of the race: “I really gave it my all for this victory, we deserved it,” Scaroni said in the post-race interview. “The team believed in me a lot. We knew Adam Yates was really strong and that this climb was very suited to his characteristics. With 1.5 km to go, I was flat out; I managed to maintain the right position and the right power. In the end, I managed to pull off a great sprint and won. This victory is thanks to the entire team who worked so hard for me and to allow me to win.
