Wout Van Aert won the ninth stage of the Giro d'Italia, from Gubbio to Siena, 181 km.

Spectacle on the dirt roads of Siena: the best remain in front immediately but a fall makes Primoz Roglic, Thomas Pidcock and Derek Gee lose ground. Isaac Del Toro takes advantage of this by attacking and taking Egan Bernal and Wout Van Aert with him. The captain of the Uae Emirates, Juan Ayuso, stays behind with Ciccone, Carapaz and Tiberi without managing to catch up with his young, and unleashed, teammate.

Bernal breaks away and Del Toro and Van Aert remain in front, competing for the stage win: the Belgian from Visma beats the Mexican and returns to victory after nine months.

Ciccone finished third at almost a minute, Tiberi immediately behind him with Carapaz, Ayuso at 1'07". Roglic lost over two minutes.

Del Toro takes the pink jersey and now becomes a serious contender for the final victory. Not without controversy at UAE.
