The British team prepares for the fifth stage with the Italian champion as a strong point, but balance will be needed to also protect Bernal's ambitions

After Ben Turner ’s shock victory on stage four of the Vuelta a España , Team INEOS Grenadiers will be aiming for another success in Wednesday’s team time trial, with former world time trial champion Filippo Ganna at the helm.

Despite the presence of very competitive teams such as Visma-Lease a Bike and UAE Team Emirates-XRG, INEOS is approaching the challenge with ambition, even though it must balance the goal of a stage victory with protecting Egan Bernal's general classification.

Dario Cioni, Ganna's sports director, explained: " Having a rider like Pippo is a great advantage, but it doesn't automatically guarantee a result like in an individual time trial. You have to manage his use well so as not to destroy the rest of the team."

Effort management will be crucial: "We usually increase his workload, having him do longer stretches than the others to slightly increase the group's speed. But everything must be calibrated so that the others can keep up with the pace."

On the 24.1 km route in Figueres, Cioni doesn't expect huge gaps but emphasizes that thirty seconds can make a difference: " You can't lose the Vuelta, but you can build up significant gaps. Today, all the teams arrive with well-equipped formations to support their leaders."

INEOS will start fifteenth at 5:33 PM, with a mix of time trial specialists like Ganna and Sheffield, stage race experts, and loyal domestiques. Cioni concludes: "On paper, we may not have the best lineup, but we've worked hard and we'll set off with the ambition of winning."
