Jasper Philipsen won the fifth stage of La Vuelta in a sprint, from Tarancòn to Albacete of 184.4 km. The Alpecin Fenix rider beat Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck Quick Step) and the excellent Alberto Dainese (Team Dsm) in a long sprint. Fraction conditioned by a fall that broke the group 11 km from the finish. On the ground, among others, Romain Bardet (Team Dsm), Mikel Nieve (Team BikeExchange) and the leader of the general, Rein Taaramae (Intermarchè Wanty Gobert). The general classification changes: Rein Taaramae, more than two minutes behind the finish line, gives the red jersey to Kenny Elissonde (Trek Segafredo). Behind him Primoz Roglic (Jumbo Visma), trailing by only 5 seconds. The stage, completely flat, was characterized by a long escape that once again saw three Iberian riders as protagonists: Oier Lazkano, Mikel Xabier Azparren and Pelavo Sanchez. The latter was resumed 30 km from the finish while the last to surrender before being taken over by the group was Lazkano (awarded as a fighter of the day). His escape lasted 162 km.
