The Grand Départ could take place in Luxembourg, with three stages in the Grand Duchy. The race will start a week early to allow riders to also participate in the Olympic Games.
The 2028 men's Tour de France will start on June 23, a week earlier than usual, to allow riders to complete the Grande Boucle and participate in the road race at the Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Luxembourg has emerged as the favorite to host the 2028 Grand Départ, despite strong competition from Prague. The Luxembourg project involves three stages, with an investment of between €8 and €9 million. ASO's final decision is expected in spring 2026.
The program includes:
- First stage: 13.5 km individual time trial in the Luxembourg capital
- Second stage: departure from Luxembourg city, through the Ernz Blanche and Mullerthal valleys, arrival in Esch-sur-Alzette
- Third stage: departure from Echternach before entering French territory
The choice of 2028 is no coincidence: it will coincide with the centenary of Nicolas Frantz's second victory and the 70th anniversary of Charly Gaul's triumph in 1958.
Regarding the calendar, the race will conclude on July 16th, creating some overlap with the Olympic trials. In particular, the Olympic time trial on July 19th will force athletes like Remco Evenepoel to make important strategic decisions.
