Christian Scaroni   (XDS Astana) wins the sixteenth stage of the Giro d'Italia Piazzola sul Brenta to San Valentino (Brentonico) of 203km.

With two different attacks, a large breakaway forms at the head of the race and on the Santa Barbara Pass, seven remain in the lead.

Roglic falls again   just before the climb of Santa Barbara and withdraws from the Giro. Black day also for Ayuso who inexorably drops out 43 km from the finish line.

On the final climb Scaroni and Fortunato extend their lead and head towards the first Italian victory in this Giro d'Italia. The two Astana decide to give the victory to   Scaroni .

In the pink jersey group, after a few attempts by Simon Yates, Carapaz starts off very strong with Gee trying to limit the damage, while Del Toro stays with Yates and Storer.   Carapaz flies and also catches up with Pellizzari, who started at the beginning of the climb.

4km from the finish line   Del Toro goes into crisis, he also breaks away from Yates and Storer and is also overtaken by Caruso and Bernal. Pellizzari takes third place with a final sprint, while Tiberi loses almost 3' to Carapaz.
