Spectacular duel between Vingegaard and Pogacar
Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step) wins the sixteenth stage of the Tour de France, from Montpellier to Mont Ventoux (171.5 km).
In the early stages of the race, a large breakaway of 40 riders formed, from which five men subsequently broke away - Abrahamsen, Arensman, Alaphilippe, Mas and Velasco - who approached Mont Ventoux with a 1'30" lead on the first chasing group and 6'30" on the yellow jersey group.
As soon as the climb began, Mas attacked, dropping Arensman and Alaphilippe, while Healy, Paret-Peintre and Buitrago tried to come back from behind.
With 8km to go, Vingegaard attacked decisively and only Pogacar remained in his wheel.
At 4 km, Healy and Paret-Peintre catch up and drop the lead, while Vingegaard attacks repeatedly, unable to distance the yellow jersey. Toward the end, Mas and Buitrago come back into the lead, and at 1.5 km, Pogacar makes his first attack.
On the very tough final ramp Healy tries to get away, but Paret-Peintre takes his wheel and takes Mont Ventoux.
As for the big names, Pogacar leads Vingegaard by a few meters. Roglic makes a fantastic climb and finishes alongside Lipowitz; Onley, and especially Gall and Vauquelin, suffer in the final stages.
