According to Vingegaard always close behind the Portuguese
Joao Almeida wins the thirteenth stage of the Vuelta a España, from Cabezon de la Sal to Angliru (202.7 km).
A 25-rider breakaway forms on the initial flat section; subsequently, on the Alto La Mozqueta , six riders break away: Tiberi, Vinokourov, Pedersen, Jungels, Garofoli, and Cepeda. The red jersey group follows at 3:30, led by the men from Q36.5.
After the Alto del Cordal , Jungels, Cepeda and Vinokourov remain in the lead, while Tiberi drops back due to a puncture on the previous descent.
The UAE is approaching Angliru very strongly, with the favourites dropping away one by one : Kuss, Vingegaard, Almeida and Hindley remain in front, who are closing in on Jungels, the last escapee to give up.
At 4.5 km to go, Almeida changes pace and only Vingegaard manages to stay on his wheel. The two climb together, with the Portuguese still in the lead, and they go head-to-head for the victory in the sprint: Almeida overtakes him, Vingegaard makes no attempt to overtake, and the UAE rider takes the Angliru. Hindley finishes third, ahead of Kuss.
Gall finished 5th, while Pellizzari also performed well in 6th, gaining on Riccitello for the white jersey. Pidcock lost ground, while Ciccone, Jorgenson, and Bernal sank.
