UAE's young Spaniard sets ambitious goals for 2025 Giro
Juan Ayuso makes no secret of his ambitions for the 2025 Giro d'Italia: the young Spanish talent from UAE Team Emirates is aiming straight for the podium, and maybe even something more.
In a lengthy interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, the 22-year-old said that anything less than a podium finish would be 'a step backwards' in his career. His teammate Tadej Pogačar managed to win the Giro at his first attempt last year, setting an important precedent for the Emirati team.
Ayuso, who cited Alberto Contador as his idol (the last Spaniard to win a Grand Tour in the 2015 Giro), arrives at the Corsa Rosa after a very promising start to the season. He has already won the Trofeo Laigueglia and the Tirreno-Adriatico, in addition to having fought with Primož Roglič at the Volta a Catalunya, where he was beaten only in the final stage in Montjuic.
A route that suits his characteristics: 'It's a beautiful route and it suits me,' commented Ayuso regarding the 2025 Giro route. 'I'm also convinced that I have the strongest teammates,' he added, referring among others to Adam Yates, whose role in the team strategy has yet to be fully defined.
Regarding cohabitation with Pogačar in the team (both have long contracts with UAE), Ayuso clarified: 'So far I have always had great opportunities and freedom in the team. Tadej is not a rival, but a role model. I consider him the Messi of cycling.'
For those who play fantasy cycling, Ayuso presents himself as one of the most interesting options for this edition of the Giro, considering his excellent form and the determination shown in recent outings.
