Van Gils hurts at Red Bull; Laporte and Williams disappear
Let's recap the 10 disappointments of the 2025 Fantacycling season, ranked from worst to best.
1) Laporte (Team Visma | Lease a bike) Initial cost 25, ftp 40
The Frenchman presented himself as the captain of Team Visma in the northern races alongside Van Aert, capable of doing well in all the classics between March and April, but in reality his season, marked by physical problems, only began in August.
He finished on a high in the Pro races: 2nd at Paris-Tours and victorious at the Tour of Holland, but he still failed to bring home any fantasy points.
2) Williams (Israel Premier Tech) Initial cost 19, ftp 35
Another rider who completely disappeared from the radar after a very interesting 2024 with victories in Down Under and Flèche Wallonne. His season ends in May, after a series of brief appearances in Australia and the Ardennes.
3) Hirschi (Tudor) Initial cost 26, ftp 329
He dominated the races at the end of 2024 wearing the UAE jersey, but was unable to repeat that feat with his new team. In fact, he earned his only championship points with an 8th place finish at the Frankfurt Classic, with a few breakaways at the Tour. He achieved a few decent finishes in smaller races toward the end of the year, but he remains one of the biggest disappointments of 2025.
4) Van Gils (Red Bull Bora) Starting cost 26, ftp 420
A rider who had proven himself to be strong in virtually all one-day races. His 2025 campaign, wearing the new Red Bull jersey, began with an uphill battle, with an injury suffered in late February compromising his season. From then on, he was virtually unable to demonstrate his worth, and he scored points neither in the Ardennes nor in the short stage races. His only bright spot was a third place in San Sebastian.
5) Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers) Initial cost 35, ftp 538
The Spaniard was expected to make a quantum leap in stage races: he raced little and poorly in the first part of the year, then placed in Romandie and Dauphiné, and was unlucky at the Tour when he broke his pelvis just when eighth place was within his reach. All things considered, he earned very few fantasy points, especially considering his price, and always struggled to keep up with the best on the climbs.
6) Gaudu (Groupama Fdj) Initial cost 21, ftp 299
A truly incomprehensible and inconsistent rider: he was a walk-on for almost the entire season, completely unknown at the Tirreno, Romandie, and Giro; then he suddenly reappeared at the Vuelta in scintillating form, even beating Vingegaard and Pedersen in a sprint and wearing the red jersey. Then, as he has accustomed us to, he disappeared again and finished the season with fewer than 300 fantasy points.
7) Vlasov (Red Bull Bora) Initial cost 30, ftp 629
Over the past three seasons, he had consistently surpassed 1,500 points, proving to be extremely strong, especially in short stage races. This year, however, he's a ghost of his former self, with very few wins and a lot of effort on the climbs. He's scored a few points in French-speaking Switzerland and Switzerland, but hasn't managed to secure a spot in the overall standings.
8) Mohoric (Bahrain Victorius) Initial cost 22, ftp 511
The Slovenian's performance has almost halved after a disastrous season to say the least: he's never featured in the spring, due to DNFs and races that ended within minutes of the winners; he's failed to redeem himself even in the short stage races, and his only two breakthroughs in 2025 were in the final stage of the Tour (3rd) and a 5th place finish at the GP Quebec. Too low to be excluded from this ranking.
9) Van Eetvelt (Lotto) Initial cost 20, ftp 702
He started well with a few poor finishes at the UAE Tour, Strade Bianche, and Catalunya; then his season ended in freefall, with no highlights and a retirement in stage 15 of the Tour. His climbing prowess is undeniable, but a change of direction will be needed for 2026.
10) A.Yates (UAE Team Emirates) Initial cost 37, ftp 769
True, he rode extensively and often as a domestique, but given his high initial cost, he didn't bring the hoped-for fantasy points in the championship. In the short stage races at the start of the season, he appeared completely out of form, and even at the Giro d'Italia, he couldn't find the right pace on the climbs, finishing 12th. However, he ended the season on a high note with two placings in Montreal and the Giro d'Italia, as well as two minor victories in Italy.
